"The House that Spirits Built"

Image
This is a movie that I would definitely see again. I was unsure of what to expect going into the theater, but I was pleasantly surprised. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits one of the country's most beautiful mansions. Built by Sarah Winchester, heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman's madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece or for the brilliant Doctor Eric Price whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters.  From scene one of this film the creepiness is immediately prominent. You follow a little boy that is awoken in the middle o...

I pray this doesn't scare you

It is rare that a horror movie makes me sweat, and my heart race. I have become so acclimated to them since I have watched so many. The film The Strangers Prey at Night did that and more. This movie directed by Johannes Roberts tells the terrifyingly true story of Mike and his wife Cindy who take their son and daughter on a road trip which becomes their worst nightmare. The family members soon find themselves in a desperate fight for survival when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park that's mysteriously deserted -- until three masked psychopaths show up to satisfy their thirst for blood. The thing about this film that made it scary was the fact that is was “based off true events.” I put that in quotes because after during further research I found out pretty much nothing about it actually happened, except for one little aspect. Thinking that what happened in the movie actually took place freaked me out, because then you think it could happen to you too. Then it was just a v...

This should wake you up

Me being a major fan of the second Amityville film, when I first saw a trailer for this movie I could not wait to see it. Then the release dates were mixed up because the first trailer said it would be released January 2015, then it was pushed until April 2016, then January of 2017 then was finally released in June of 2017. Unfortunately, it had a silent release into Google Play, then had a week-long showing in select theatre in New York. So, I thought seeing this film would never happen, except for maybe streaming it on some website. Then, one day I came across it while looking for a movie to rent in one of those Redbox machines at the store. My dreams of wanting to see the film had come true. I just hoped and prayed it would live up to my expectations. I am glad to say, for me, I enjoyed the film. It revolves around a new family moving into the house of horrors, a single mother with her three children: seventeen-year-old Belle, her twin brother James (who is in a comatose state),...

Can you put the pieces together?

Image
So I know I usually post scary story reviews on the weekends, but I actually wrote this blog in October, and just forgot to post it. Since I saw this film I still feel I should post this review because better late than never. Sorry that it is kind of out of place, but if you haven't seen Jigsaw yet this can help you decide if you should or not. The Saw franchise took seven years to complete, with a total count of seven gloriously gruesome movies. Everyone thought when the final movie came out in 2010 that was the end of the Jigsaw killer. But he is back in the new movie Jigsaw that was released October 27, 2017. The movie is a horrific mystery that follows a series of murders bearing all the markings of the Jigsaw killer, law enforcement officials find themselves chasing the ghost of a man who has been dead for over a decade, and they become embroiled in a new game that's only just begun. Is John Kramer back from the dead to remind the world to be grateful for the gift o...

Tiptoe through the keyhole

Image
For those of you who did not understand the title of this blog posting, I get it. This is the fourth movie of a series but if you know the song “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” it will make perfect sense. That song has represented the Insidious franchise since 2010. If you do not know the song listen to it, and it will not be as flowery as you expect. Insidious: The Last Key is the fourth movie in the series, but not the best. If you have seen the trailer for this film it sends the wrong message. The trailer is more terrifying than the movie, but definitely draws you in. The average rating on Rotten Tomatoes from the audience point of view, which I will paste with the links, is a 3.6/5 which I personally feel does not do the movie justice. Then, the average Rotten Tomatoes scoring is a 4.9/10, which I also feel is not what this movie deserveded. Though the audience rating is close to a ⅘ I appreciate that this film has a focus on true demons: people. Two of the reviews I read o...

The Whispers

Image
Today being another Saturday I think it is time for a Scary Story Saturday. The story I plan to review is one that I can relate to in a sense, but I cannot relate to the experience. I hope no other person can because some scary stuff went down. The story’s link will be posted at the bottom of the page but here is the story: This is a story I do not often tell. I promise, sincerely, that this has scarred me for life and although I have looked into psychological explanations for what I heard and natural explanations for what occurred, they remain unsatisfactory. When I was a child, I was scared of the dark. I swore to my mother I heard voices in it. They were not evil, but they were not familiar and so they scared me. It was not uncommon in the middle of the night for me to wake up and hear “whispers” as I would call them when asking my mom. She figured they were just “bumps in the night” and typical kids nightmare material. I tried often to explain to her that it was more t...

Katch 'em Kill 'em

Today being another Thursday I think it is once again time for a throwback. So, being a movie review blog being non bias plays a key role. In this type of blog, I have to create reviews based on the sole quality of a film. All though this type of writing is really my goal, this posting while definitely have bias present. I just wanted to give a warning before getting into a review. The reason this may show that I am leaning towards positive reviews on this film is because it is my favorite horror film ever! This movie may be older, and may not be the coolest, but to me, it is one of the best horror films out there. Okay, so you are probably wondering what movie that I am pretty much raving about. This movie would be Amityville Horror, made in 2005, following a string of Amityville films created after the book was published in 1977. The film follows George Lutz (Ryan Reynolds) and his wife, Kathy (Melissa George), when they find a beautiful new house in the small town of Amityville...
