I pray this doesn't scare you
It is rare that a horror movie makes me sweat, and my heart race. I have become so acclimated to them since I have watched so many. The film The Strangers Prey at Night did that and more. This movie directed by Johannes Roberts tells the terrifyingly true story of Mike and his wife Cindy who take their son and daughter on a road trip which becomes their worst nightmare. The family members soon find themselves in a desperate fight for survival when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park that's mysteriously deserted -- until three masked psychopaths show up to satisfy their thirst for blood. The thing about this film that made it scary was the fact that is was “based off true events.” I put that in quotes because after during further research I found out pretty much nothing about it actually happened, except for one little aspect. Thinking that what happened in the movie actually took place freaked me out, because then you think it could happen to you too. Then it was just a very stressful film because I did not want the main characters to die and they came so close to that ending many times. So, panic was the main emotion I felt during the film. Not fear. It was smart though to say it was based on true events because that is what really played into its’ fear factor.
I will say that if you scare easier this film will probably terrify you, I am just more desensitized when it comes to horror. To give you a comparison the friend I saw it with held her knees to her chest was biting her nails, and every time there was a knock on a door/jump scare she leaped out of her seat and flailed her arms. So, I will not discredit this movie on its ability to frighten someone from my own personal experience. I will say the fact the three killers were masked amped up the horror. Not being able to see a person's face takes away their humanity, transforming them from man to monster. Plus the masks they used were hella creepy. Also, the fact that the killers were just killing for the heck of it. *minor spoiler alert* When the daughter of the family asked her attacker why she was doing what she was doing her answer was, “Why not.” Then just the overall emotion that the characters portray gives you the ability to feel major amounts of empathy. Allowing you to connect to a character, especially in horror, really makes your emotions go all over the place.
Overall, the major thing in this film that bothered me was its overuse of jump scares. But it is a movie I would see again.
