Tiptoe through the keyhole

For those of you who did not understand the title of this blog posting, I get it. This is the fourth movie of a series but if you know the song “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” it will make perfect sense. That song has represented the Insidious franchise since 2010. If you do not know the song listen to it, and it will not be as flowery as you expect. Insidious: The Last Key is the fourth movie in the series, but not the best. If you have seen the trailer for this film it sends the wrong message. The trailer is more terrifying than the movie, but definitely draws you in.

The average rating on Rotten Tomatoes from the audience point of view, which I will paste with the links, is a 3.6/5 which I personally feel does not do the movie justice. Then, the average Rotten Tomatoes scoring is a 4.9/10, which I also feel is not what this movie deserveded. Though the audience rating is close to a ⅘ I appreciate that this film has a focus on true demons: people. Two of the reviews I read on the Rotten Tomatoes site focus on the minimal plot holes the film contains. One from the Chicago Sun-Times main issue is the timeline compared to the other films in the franchise, then just explains the plot. To clarify the timeline the third movie is a sequel to the first two, which are in order, so the first three can be watched in the order of one two three than three two one. Then, this newest instalment follows the third film, and can lead a viewer right into the first film. So it kind of defeats the purpose of bring able to watch the films in forward order than backwards. It sounds more confusing than it actually is, but you can watch the films in order of three, four, one, then two and that will be their proper order. It is not uncommon for a movie series to be released out of order, it has been done before. Another review I looked at from New York Magazine also just revolves around the confusion of the movie itself, though there really is no confusion. My guess is these reporters did not watch the first three, or they would have no confusion.

This film also gives audience insight into the history of our heroin Elise, which I personally appreciated. As I said previously this movies had more focus on actually people than just trying to rid a house of a demon. It also has more involvement with the  people seeking Elise’s help, which leads us to real life demons. The people who torture, and abuse those around them are the monsters that walk among us, and you may not even realize they are right beside you.

My final note on the subject is that this movie was not amazing, but if you are a fan of the franchise it is worth seeing. The demon in it is terrifying, and I think you will enjoy a glimpse of actual everyday monsters. The “Further” is certainly more hell-ish than we’ve seen before, and it is as demonic as it could be. Is this really the last movie in the series, maybe, but we will have to wait and see. Just do not unlock any red doors, because according to this movie that can result in allowing hell to walk join us on Earth.
