Another Ground Hog Day
So, since yesterday was my actual birthday I felt it was the perfect day to review Happy Death Day. Luckily, I didn't have to keep reliving yesterday or get murdered. Though this was not really what I would call a horror movie it was still one of the best movies I’ve seen recently. Although this movie is technically not horror I felt, since I saw it, deserves a review. This movie follows Tree Gelbman who is a blissfully self-centred collegian who wakes up on her birthday in the bed of a student named Carter. As the morning goes on, Tree gets the eerie feeling that she's experienced the events of this day before. When a masked killer suddenly takes her life in a brutal attack, she once again magically wakes up in Carter's dorm room unharmed. Now, the frightened young woman must relive the same day over and over until she figures out who murdered her.
I have noticed that the plot of living the same day over and over again is making a comeback. The film If I Fall is another movie that uses that story, but did not use it to its best ability. I personally feel that Happy Death Day helped add more to that aspect of having the character become weaker with each life. Instead of her just continuously living in this day she uses each life a different way. I am not going to explain how she uses each of her chances because that will spoil a large portion of the movie. I just greatly appreciated that there was more to the plot than just her needing to figure out who her murderer is.
Also, trying to figure out who the murder is really kept me captivated in the film. Although I did figure out who it was early on I kept questioning my guess because there was a large cast. As you learn more about each character and the main character, there is a grand amount of suspects that even if you feel it is one person, your guess will change as the movie goes on. The director of this movie: Christopher B. Landon, should be very proud of himself. This film combines a comedy, a thriller, and a mystery so well. It is a movie I would definitely see again, and recommend others see too.
So, with yesterday being my birthday I'm thrilled I don’t wake up today and live through it again, I am also seriously ecstatic that I didn't get murdered, that would seriously make this a terrible birthday.
