What could IT be?
IT...a movie most know for it’s horrifying clown. The movie that most likely generated the case of coulrophobia also known as the phobia of clowns. But how horrific is this movie really? The 2017 remake of the original film from 1990 was heavily amped up.
Just the movie posters are enough to scare people away or draw them in for more horror. It was ready to be the year’s scariest film. From the menacing clown to the creepy concept this reboot had so much potential that it sadly did not live up to. It takes place in the small town of Derry but what makes this town different? The fact that children are constantly disappearing. The constant of each disappearance each kid came into contact with a clown. As the story progresses the five main characters in the movie come to the realization that this clown is the reason kids are vanishing, but that’s not all IT can do. IT has the ability to morph itself into whatever scares you the most. That is how it got the name of IT, since it was never one thing the kids decide to just call the monster IT. IT had all the right factors of the perfect horror movie: a unique concept, a story that people are familiar with yet would be excited to revisit, it takes place in a small town, lovable main characters, and the ideal villain. With all these parts being in one movie especially the clown it should be able to scare anyone. The clown in this movie, PennyWise, has the ability to frighten anyone who even looks at him. From his oddly painted face to his sketchy demeanor he has all the right things to be horrifying. Mainly in the first scene of this movie, the most iconic one, when Georgie is attacked by pennywise opened up the gates for endless possibilities of ways to frighten the audience.
Unfortunately, the movie did not live up to its expectations because the thrill was not present. Reasons being some scenes where PennyWise was tormenting the children the director, Andy Muschietti, chose to implement too much comedy. The comedic aspects of even just the clown laughing during a serious attack scene outweighed the amount of fear that was supposed to be translated to the viewers. Don’t get me wrong the movie was creepy but it didn’t go anywhere. Moments where I was ready to be terrified it left me wanting more.
I know you may be thinking that I am just being to critical or am just not easily scared, but I am not the only person who had this thought. A critic from Time Magazine stated, “Doesn’t cut very deep and isn’t very scary”. A critic from the New Yorker wrote, “The movie is not terrifying but blandly edifying”.Even a super reviewer as just an audience person wrote, “It’s funny really funny”. So, for those of you who think I am the only person who thought the movie that was supposed to be the most terrifying movie of the year wasn’t. Although the movie wasn’t horrific it was very well made, and produced. That is what made it such a good movie. The way they were able to have a simple clown morph before your eyes, or the way they faded sounds in and out. The production of this movie is really what made it spectacular, but not only that. I was able to watch this movie and not predict what was going to happen next, I had no idea how they were going to end it. I was glad that it was able to keep my interest and want to know what would happen. So, although it was not the scariest movie I’ve ever seen it definitely was one of the best production wise.
I hope you enjoyed reading what I thought and are in for more scares from the Blog of Boo’s.
